Common grooming tactics include:

• Posing as a peer or teenager to gain a child's trust
• Offering gifts, in-game currency (Robux), or special items to create a sense of obligation
• Gradually introducing sexual topics or content into conversation
• Encouraging the child to keep the relationship a secret from parents
• Moving conversations off-platform to less monitored apps like Discord, Snapchat, or WhatsApp
• Making the child feel emotionally dependent or guilty for pulling away

Why Children On Roblox Are Especially Vulnerable

Roblox's design has been widely criticized by child safety advocates, law enforcement agencies, and courts for features that make grooming easier than it should be. These include:

Weak Age Verification

Creating a Roblox account requires only a username, password, and a self-reported birthdate. There is no meaningful verification process. This means adults can register as children, and children can falsely claim to be older to bypass parental controls. Anyone can pretend to be anyone.

Open Chat and Private Messaging

The platform allows real-time chat between strangers, including a private "whisper chat" feature. Bloomberg Businessweek reported in 2024 that since 2018, at least 24 people had been arrested in the United States on charges of abducting or sexually abusing children they had met on Roblox.

The RCMP has issued alerts about organized exploitation networks using gaming platforms to identify victims, using threats, harassment, and extortion to coerce children into producing sexual content.
