• Believe they are equally responsible for what is happening
• Fear that disclosure will result in losing their device, being punished, or having their parents disappointed in them
• Feel genuine emotional attachment to the predator — grooming often mimics the dynamics of a caring relationship
• Believe the threats being made are real and that telling someone will make things worse

Behavioural Warning Signs

The following signs, particularly in combination, warrant a calm and non-accusatory conversation with your child:

Changes in Device Behaviour

• Switching screens quickly or closing the device when you enter the room
• Taking the device to private spaces (bedroom, bathroom) more frequently
• Playing late at night after bedtime
• Unusual increases in screen time or refusing to stop playing even when asked
• Becoming defensive or upset when you ask about their online activity

Changes in Mood or Personality

• Unexplained anxiety, mood swings, or emotional withdrawal
• Seeming fearful, distressed, or upset after being online
• Loss of interest in activities, friends, or school that they previously enjoyed
• Increased aggression or irritability
• Signs of depression, hopelessness, or talking about feeling trapped

Social Changes

• Pulling away from family members or close friends

• Having more in-game currency or items than could be explained by their own spending

Platform Migration

• Asking to delete chat histories or certain apps
• Referring to conversations that clearly happened outside of Roblox

Law enforcement investigators note that online predators often pose as peers or friends, build trust over time, and use fear, shame, guilt, or secrecy to manipulate young people. Parents should pay attention to new online contacts their child seems unusually attached to, or afraid of, as this may be a warning sign of grooming or coercion.

How to Start the Conversation With Your Child

If you have noticed some of these warning signs, how you approach the conversation matters as much as having it. Some guidance:

• Choose a calm, private moment — not immediately after catching them doing something that worried you
• Start from curiosity, not accusation: "I've noticed you seem stressed lately. I want you to know you can always talk to me"
• Make the consequences of honesty clear: "If something happened online that made you uncomfortable, I'm not going to take your devices away or be angry at you. I just want to help"
• Avoid catastrophizing — children shut down when they feel the situation is already out of control
• If they disclose something, listen completely before responding. Believe them.

What to Do After Disclosure
