Roblox is one of the most popular online platforms in the world, with nearly 100 million daily users — and roughly half of them are under the age of 13. For many Canadian families, it is simply where their kids hang out after school. But behind the colourful, blocky graphics lies a serious and documented safety problem: predatory adults using the platform to groom, manipulate, and exploit children.
This article explains what online grooming is, how it happens on Roblox specifically, and what parents and survivors need to know.
What Is Online Grooming?
Grooming refers to a gradual process by which an adult builds trust with a child — and sometimes with their family — in order to eventually exploit or sexually abuse them. It does not happen overnight. Predators are patient, strategic, and often skilled at appearing safe.
Common grooming tactics include:
- Posing as a peer or teenager to gain a child's trust
- Offering gifts, in-game currency (Robux), or special items to create a sense of obligation
- Gradually introducing sexual topics or content into conversation
- Encouraging the child to keep the relationship a secret from parents
- Moving conversations off-platform to less monitored apps like Discord, Snapchat, or WhatsApp
- Making the child feel emotionally dependent or guilty for pulling away
Why Children On Roblox Are Especially Vulnerable
Roblox's design has been widely criticized by child safety advocates, law enforcement agencies, and courts for features that make grooming easier than it should be. These include:
Weak Age Verification
Creating a Roblox account requires only a username, password, and a self-reported birthdate. There is no meaningful verification process. This means adults can register as children, and children can falsely claim to be older to bypass parental controls. Anyone can pretend to be anyone.
Open Chat and Private Messaging
The platform allows real-time chat between strangers, including a private "whisper chat" feature. Researchers found that even after Roblox introduced messaging restrictions for under-13 users in November 2024, children as young as five could still communicate with adults. Predators use public chat to make initial contact, then move children to private messages where there is less oversight.
User-Generated Content Without Adequate Oversight
Any developer can upload games and experiences to Roblox. Despite content moderation efforts, the platform has repeatedly hosted games simulating sexual scenarios, strip clubs, and other explicitly inappropriate content. This content has been documented as a tool predators use to desensitize children before escalating contact.
Robux as a Grooming Tool
Roblox's in-game currency, Robux, has been identified as a common lure. Predators offer children free Robux in exchange for conversation, photos, or compliance with requests. For young users already motivated to earn in-game currency, this can be a highly effective manipulation tactic.
Bloomberg Businessweek reported in 2024 that since 2018, at least 24 people had been arrested in the United States on charges of abducting or sexually abusing children they had met on Roblox.
The Canadian Context
The RCMP has issued alerts about organized exploitation networks using gaming platforms to identify victims, using threats, harassment, and extortion to coerce children into producing sexual content.
Canadian families are not immune. The same platform vulnerabilities that have led to dozens of lawsuits across the United States also apply to children playing Roblox in Ontario, Alberta, Manitoba, and every other province.
Grooming Can Have Serious Long-Term Consequences
Children who are groomed online often experience significant psychological harm, including:
- Anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress
- Feelings of shame, guilt, and self-blame
- Difficulty trusting adults or forming healthy relationships
- Academic and social withdrawal
- In the most severe cases, trauma connected to in-person exploitation or assault
The harm does not always present immediately. Many survivors carry the effects of online grooming for years without connecting their struggles to what happened online.
What You Can Do Right Now
If your child uses Roblox — or any online gaming platform — there are immediate steps you can take:
- Review your child's friend list and chat history on Roblox
- Enable parental controls and spending restrictions through the Roblox account settings
- Have an open, non-judgmental conversation with your child about who they talk to online
- Make clear that if anyone online ever makes them uncomfortable, they will not be in trouble for telling you
- Check whether your child has accounts on secondary platforms like Discord or Snapchat where conversations may have moved
Families whose children have experienced online sexual exploitation, sextortion, or other harms connected to Roblox may be entitled to pursue legal action. Contact our team for a free, confidential consultation to discuss your circumstances and understand your legal options.
