Sextortion is one of the most devastating forms of online exploitation targeting children today — and Roblox has become one of the most common starting points. If you are a parent, or if you have personally experienced this as a young person, this article explains what sextortion is, how it unfolds, and what steps can be taken right now.
What Is Sextortion?
Sextortion is a form of blackmail in which a predator coerces a child or teen into producing and sending sexually explicit images or videos, and then threatens to release that material unless the victim provides more images, pays money, or complies with other demands. The term combines "sexual" and "extortion."
There are two main forms:
- Sexual gratification-driven sextortion: The predator's goal is to collect more and more explicit material from the victim, using shame and fear to keep the child compliant.
- Financially motivated sextortion: The predator demands money (often cryptocurrency or gift cards) and threatens to share the images with the victim's friends, family, or school if payment is not made.
Both forms cause profound psychological harm. Victims describe feeling trapped with nowhere to turn — and tragically, some do not seek help before it is too late.
In February 2025, a teenage boy died by suicide after a sextortionist threatened to distribute an AI-generated explicit image unless he paid $3,000. The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children received over 500,000 sextortion reports last year. The Federal Bureau of Investigation estimates that at least 20 deaths have been linked to these scams since 2021.
How Sextortion Starts on Roblox
Roblox is not where sextortion typically escalates — but it is frequently where it begins. Here is how the pattern commonly unfolds:
Step 1: Initial Contact
A predator creates an account posing as a peer, often a teenager with similar game interests. They join the same games as a child, begin friendly conversation, and present themselves as trustworthy. Because Roblox allows open messaging between strangers,
this initial contact requires almost no effort on the predator's part.
Step 2: Building Trust (Grooming)
Over days, weeks, or even months, the predator builds a sense of friendship or romantic connection. They may offer Robux, praise the child, express understanding of their problems, and position themselves as a special confidant — someone the child
can trust in ways they might not trust their parents.
Step 3: Moving Off-Platform
Once trust is established, the predator suggests moving the conversation to a less monitored platform — Discord, Snapchat, Instagram, or direct text messaging. This is a significant red flag. It is at this stage that conversations typically turn
sexual.
Step 4: The Request
The predator requests an explicit image or video. This may be framed as an act of trust, love, or normalcy. In some cases, the predator first shares an explicit image of themselves — or of another young person — to lower the child's inhibitions.
AI-generated fake images are increasingly being used at this stage.
Step 5: The Threat
Once the child sends any explicit material, the predator's tone often changes immediately. They reveal they have saved the image and threaten to send it to the child's contacts, post it publicly, or report it to their parents unless demands are met.
The child is now caught in a cycle of compliance driven by fear and shame.
Why Children Do Not Tell Anyone
One of the most important things parents and caregivers must understand is that victims of sextortion almost never come forward on their own — at least not immediately. Here is why:
The child believes they did something wrong by sending the image
They are afraid parents will take away their devices or be angry
This is why the single most important thing a parent can say to their child is: "If you ever send something online that you regret, you are not in trouble. Tell me and we will figure it out together."
If Your Child Has Been Targeted — Immediate Steps
If you discover or suspect your child is being sextorted, stay calm. Your reaction in the first moments matters enormously. Support your child through this and do the following:
- Consult with local law enforcement and/or Cybertip.ca,
- Take steps to interrupt all communication your child is having with the person of concern,
- Search through the device for information to help determine what has transpired… If content is found, do not delete it; safely secure it and consult with local law enforcement and/or Cybertip.ca.
- Contact a Toronto personal injury lawyer who is trusted to handle these cases.
Legal Rights in Canada
Families who have experienced sextortion connected to Roblox may have legal options beyond reporting to police. If the platform's inadequate safety design contributed to the harm — through weak age verification, insufficient moderation, or features that knowingly enabled predatory contact — there may be grounds for a civil claim.
Speaking with a personal injury lawyer does not commit you to any course of action. Many firms, including those focused on mass tort litigation, offer confidential consultations at no cost.
Families whose children have experienced online sexual exploitation, sextortion, or other harms connected to Roblox may be entitled to pursue legal action. Contact our team for a free, confidential consultation to discuss your circumstances and understand your legal options.
